Fond Memories

Nursing is an especially important topic in my life right now. My son breast fed for 3 years and naturally weaned over a month’s time. He is now 7 and is totally a Daddy’s boy. He doesn’t hug me or want me around much and while I know it’s important for his development I have found myself really thinking a lot about our days when he breast fed.

Unlike my daughter who saw breast feeding as only a necessity and something stopping her from playing, my son saw it as bonding and loving time. His hand around my back would softly rub my back and he would use his other hand to hold my finger. He lingered and took his time. As soon as he could control his arms, he would hug me when he finished eating as if to say ‘Thank you”. Then he’d go play.

Because of those special times I can let him go and grow and be what he is called to do. I know he will come back to me in times and will need me for different things but from now on they will be different. He is more and more like a little man with each passing day and I am very proud.

But I know that the intimacy we shared those first 3 years will not be repeated, nor should they be. My hope is that my love and acceptance of his love then willingness to set him free, will turn into his being able to give that same tenderness and love to his wife someday.

TN Breastfeeding Controversy
